It’s amazing how important lyrics are in a good song. They can completely change the way you view certain subjects and you may find you like a song that you previously hated because you just heard the words.
And I am no exception: Working in retail (yes, I am back at the Tire) I get a more than healthy dose of soft favourites and adult contemporary top 40. The newest addition to the station has been You’re Beautiful by James Blunt. I hate this overplayed song mostly because Blunt has an extremely annoying voice. I can’t stand it.
But–I actually listened to the words today and much to my surprise he was singing about events that are happening in my life this very instant! I have met the girl of my dreams but cannot do anything about it while she is tied to another guy. Blunt hit the nail right on the head and I now have a new appreciation for this song and will look forward to the next time I hear it. His voice however, is still extremely annoying.
This is the awesome power of the lyric! Keep up the good work CK. You have a hard but very important job.

I’m a firm believer that the ability to write poetry/song lyrics is God-given…simple as that. Not just anyone can do it…you have to have been born with the talent…
I myself used to really dislike pretty much all forms of music…until one day I actually took the time to pay attention to the lyrics of a CD I was listening to. So I agree with you….taking notice of the lyrics can compeletely change the way you view a song…or music in general…
And while we’re on the subject of lyrics…y’all need to have a lyrics page or something on this site…or put your lyrics in the insert in your CD
I don’t know why I’m writing this, but seriously… Writing is a skill that you LEARN all through school. Being able to express yourself is something you can practice. Reading poetry and books is probably the most surefire way of improving your writing, besides just writing. So it’s not a mystical gift, it’s something that if you work on, you can get good at. Most people could be more “talented” except that they are afraid to fail. Well, that’s my opinion.
Toast, tell the girl not the internet!
Coolshades, was that a U2 CD per chance
All I have to say is that I hope tink’s post doesn’t spark a “nature versus nuture” debate on this thread…
Why yes, BB…how’d you guess?
And I won’t start a debate, Joel…no worries…
I WILL say, though, that I have done a lot of reading in my time…and did tons of writing in undergrad…yet I still couldn’t write a song if my life depended on it. haha
Joel…what exactly is nuture? Perhaps you meant to say “Nature vs Neuter?” If so…I’m worried…very worried…
You could write a song if your life depended on it. If you had to, you would write an entire opera to save your skin. In all likelihood though, it wouldn’t be any good.
As for nature vs. nurture, I learned something interesting on the CBC lately. This scientist was doing genetic research on tiny worms and found that she could alter the expression of the worms’ DNA by making changes to it’s environment. Nurture all the way!
Ok, you’re right…I could write one….but it would most likely suck. LOL
Let’s hope my life wouldn’t depend on how good the song was.
*clears throat*
*sings*
…there she was just a walkin’ down the street, singin’ doo wah diddy, diddy-dum, diddy -doo…
Cool, I’m pretty certain you could write music 100 times better than that little number. Only because you know God though. *wink*
Ah….very good point, px….very good point
So is that why “artists” always thank God at the Grammy’s?
Exactly….because they know they would never have written an award-winning song had God not given them the talent for it.
Although…..I do like this quote from Bono on the subject…
“When those people get up at the Grammys and say, ‘I thank God’, I always imagine God going, ‘Oh, don’t — please don’t thank me for that one. Please, oh, that’s an awful one! Don’t thank me for that — that’s a piece of crap!”
