It has been two years since Joss Whedon’s short lived TV series Firefly was taken off the Fox network not even completing an entire season. Time has passed and DVD has done wonders for the sci-fi/western. The show has quickly grown into a cult classic and DVD sales have been so good that a feature was greenlighted through Universal Studios.
For those of you who haven’t been introduced to Firefly: Set 500 years in the future, Malcolm Reynolds pilots a Firefly class spacecraft called Serenity and does odd jobs to make ends meet. Those jobs may or may not be legal but have since brought together the most ragtag team of misfits that now journey across the galaxy. Western style clothing with oriental influence set the mood and feel for the drama. The players have southern accents and use old fashion guns. The spaceships are not fancy but rather old, beat up junkers. This is not Star Trek.
Serenity’s plot flows straight out of the TV series. It is written and directed by Joss Whedon and stars Nathan Fillion (Mal), Gina Torres (Zoe), Alan Tudyk (Wash), Morena Baccarin (Inara), Adam Baldwin (Jayne), Jewel Staite (Kaylee), Sean Maher (Simon), Summer Glau (River), and Ron Glass (Book). The entire cast from the TV series reunites to bring an action packed adventure that will leave fans wanting so much more (in a good way)!
River is a mysterious girl. No one knows much about her, including her brother. But the Alliance want to get a hold of her and learn her secrets and it is up to the Serenity crew to keep them away. Since the series was so short lived these characters had no time to be developed. Many of them have mysterious background and interesting stories. This movie deals with a lot of those questions. Amazing plot twists and awesome action will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time.
Like everything Joss Whedon touches, Serenity is all about how the characters relate and work off of each other. The dialogue is clever but most of all it is full of heart. After watching the show (and this holds true with Buffy and Angel) you actually care about these characters. You feel like you know them and are friends with them. Joss Whedon always puts extra special attention in character relationships and that is what sets this show apart from others.
You are probably thinking, but what if I have not seen any of the TV series? Will I still understand the movie? Absolutely. Sure, there are plenty of inside jokes for those who know the characters but the ’story so far’ is told right at the beginning to help you along.
However, having said that: Don’t see this movie if you haven’t seen the series!!! This show is one of the best shows from the past ten years! Do yourself a favour and introduce yourself to these people and these stories. You won’t regret it.
