I went to Banned in Canada 5 at the Media Club last night, and I’m so glad I did. Awesome show. We played at Banned in Canada 2 back when it was at the Picadilly Pub. I wanted to go say hi to Natasha from the Barc Project and check out the Media Club. Every time I’ve tried to see a show at the Media Club, it’s been sold out. It’s this great little club that manages to get huge bands in all the time. Welkin had their CD release party before the event. If you haven’t seen Welkin, you’ve got to check them out. I was surprised by how many people I knew at the event. I was in the Jazz program with Mark Berube’s bass player. Chocolate Soup played their first unplugged set ever with vocal percussion a la Ben Harper. Good stuff soup. The Skatomatics got people dancing. Mark Berube really stole the show, though. Keys/accordian, vox, cello, upright bass, and drums. He reminded me a bit of Hawksley Workman. At the end of the show Mark with his accordian and his bass player (picture upright bass) chased each other all over the venue while playing their last song unplugged. They ended the show by running out the door. Needless to say, they’re moving on to the finals on April 8th. I highly recommend going (unless the SHEEP have a show that night).
