Although a good Canadian TV show is even more rare than a Canadian athlete winning Gold at the Olympics, this is one show that has it right!
Like any good TV show, this one is based upon its characters. Taking place in the fictional town of Dog River, Saskatchewan, Corner Gas plays up on all of the typical stereotypes of small town life in Canada. It’s hard to say who my favorite character is, they are all very well written. What really sets the show apart from others is that in every episode there is a common thread that each character obsesses about in different ways.
Comedian Brent Butt is the star of the show, which answers the question “What would Brent’s life have been like if he had never left the small town?” While it lacks some of the excitement of the big city, the interplay between the characters and the unexpected twists show that life is what you make it, and life is about the relationships that you build with the people around you. Some of the stereotypes that they play on are “clueless city girl,” “crazy retired farmer with extreme paranoia,” “dopey small town guy with no discernable job,” “rural cops with nothing to do,” and so many more.
If you get a chance, check out the show. It’s on CTV on Tuesday nights, and on the Comedy Network on Saturdays.
The website is really well developed, and has lots of fun stuff as well as information about the show.
