I saw Billy Corrigan last night at the Arts Club Theatre on Granville Island. He is on tour in support of his new poetry book, Blinking With Fists. Billy has a big influence on the way I view song writing and lyrical craftsmanship. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is still one of the most frequently listened to albums in my collection and Jimmy Chaimberlin is an major influence in the way I play my drums (I don’t actually sound anything like him, but I try). Billy read selections of his book interspersed with acoustic guitar and chats with people from the audience. He brought his friend with him to sing, and her powerful, tranquil voice added so much to his playing and his poetry. This evening was a great chance to see a rock star at a personal level. He answered people’s questions, brought people on stage so they read some of his poems that influenced them, and he stuck around after the show for handshakes. A wonderful time was had by all.
On a side note, I saw Chocolate Soup at the Backstage Lounge afterwards. They have improved so much since they played with us a couple months back. They are way tighter and have polished up their sound. They even covered the Pixies. Good job guys! Hope to play a show with you again soon!
Toast!
